Safety Laser Scanner vs. LiDAR Sensor: What’s the Difference?
Short answer: A LiDAR sensor measures distance for functions such as mapping, localization, and obstacle detection. A safety laser scanner is engineered and certified to monitor protective fields and signal a safety system when intrusion occurs. Both may use laser ranging, but only a properly selected and integrated safety scanner should perform personnel-protection functions.
The decisive difference is the safety function
Measurement data quality does not make a sensor safety-rated. Safety scanners are designed around defined performance levels, diagnostics, protective fields, and safety outputs. The surrounding controller, wiring, stopping performance, validation, and risk assessment remain part of the safety system.
Where standard LiDAR fits
UST-series LiDAR supports navigation, mapping, localization, presence sensing, and non-safety obstacle detection. It can help a robot understand its environment but must not be presented as a personnel-protection device.
Where UAM safety scanners fit
The UAM-05LP provides a 5 m protective area and up to 20 m warning area. The UAM-05LPA retains the 5 m protective area while expanding the warning area to 30 m and supporting 128 area patterns. The UAM-05LECA-T301 adds EtherCAT connectivity and up to 176 switchable patterns.
Limitations and engineering responsibility
A safety scanner does not make an entire machine safe by itself. Protective-field dimensions, response time, braking distance, mounting, contour reference, bypass prevention, control reliability, and validation must follow the applicable risk assessment and standards.
